World Chess Hall of Fame’s With the Mind

An invitation only gathering of art patrons and collectors welcomed photographer Anne Deniau to an Opening Reception at the Philip Slein Gallery, Wednesday, October 16, 2013. The gallery is presenting a selection of Ms. Deniau’s images, With the Mind, as part of A Queen Within exhibition at the World Chess Hall of Fame, which runs October 19, 2013 through April 18, 2014.

Photographer Anne Deniau comprised a part of designer Alexander McQueen’s inner circle and the sole photographer with behind-the-scenes access to his collections and shows. The World Chess Hall of Fame, with support from the Philip Slein Gallery in Saint Louis, is hosting the American debut of images from Deniau’s book, Love Looks Not With the Eyes: Thirteen Years with Lee Alexander McQueen, an exclusive exhibition of prints. Ms. Deniau’s work will remain available to view until Wednesday, November 27, and limited edition prints will continue for sale at Q Boutique at the World Chess Hall of Fame.

The World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF), a nonprofit organization committed to building awareness for the cultural and artistic significance of chess, opened on September 9, 2011, in St. Louis’ Central West End after moving from previous locations in New York and Miami. The WCHOF is housed in an historic 15,900 square-foot building that includes three floors of galleries, the U.S. and World Chess Halls of Fame and the stylish Q Boutique. It is located immediately across Maryland Avenue from the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, forming a “chess campus” recognized as the chess capital of the United States as well as one of the game’s top international centers.

In 2003, the Philip Slein Gallery premiered on Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis by co-owners Philip Slein and Tom Bussmann, who share a wide range of interests focused on painting and are committed to showing the best work regardless of style. During 2008 Bridget Melloy joined the staff, and in 2011 Phil and Tom developed a partnership with the venerable art dealer Jim Schmidt of Schmidt Contemporary Art. The gallery moved to its current Central West End spot in 2012.
