The World Aquarium held an Adult Night at the Aquarium, in the spirit of Bob Cassilly, Friday, March 6, 2015. The evening not only dazzled the senses but also enabled guests to bid on items from the “Wonders of the Water” live and silent auctions.

Bob Cassilly, original founder of the City Museum, which houses the World Aquarium on the second floor, passed away in September, 2011. He had a reputation for throwing outlandish parties. Some of his events had become legendary among adults.

Leonard Sonnenschein, founder, president of the World Aquarium and close friend of Bob’s, had wanted to plan a party that reflected Cassilly’s whimsical nature and raise funds for the Aquarium. Sonnenschein accomplished both dreams with an evening filled with mermaids, loving fire by the Fire Technicians Performance Troupe, magic and merriment.

VIP guests arrived to hors d’oeuvres, passed by sea maidens, and assorted foods prepared by Bistro 517. They also could begin some early bidding on the various treasures offered. Performances by the Fire Technicians Troupe and a magician entertained the crowd until Mark O. Howald, auctioneer extraordinaire for Link Auction Galleries, launched the final bidding.

The World Aquarium has a mission to present, promote and protect the world of water. The mission is fulfilled through education, exhibits, conservation programming and research projects. Its efforts work to increase the understanding of aquatic life and environments, to advance the importance of conserving the world of water, and to provide leadership for the preservation and sustainable use of aquatic resources.
