Family, friends, and fans converged to celebrate Mike Shannon’s 75th Birthday, Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood. A greeting card and Clydesdale welcomed them outside before they entered to enjoy a cold frosty one and toast the legendary “Voice of the Cardinals”. A few more surprises awaited them and the guest of honor.

The food and beverage flowed during the event. An opulent seafood display featured gigantic jumbo shrimp (no kidding) and a separate assortment of meats and cheeses.Servers passed shrimp rolls and beef sliders and a special Maker’s  “46” to sample.

Some of the celebrities included Missouri Governor Jay Nixon; Hall of Famers Albert “Red” Schoendienst, Whitey Herzog; Al Hrabosky; Rick Hummel (The Commish); Jay Randolph; Eddie Sholar (Fast Eddie’s);.and representatives from Maker’s Mark and Anheuser-Busch. Mike Claiborne, KMOX 1120 Sports, served as the master of ceremonies and presided over the presentations.Governor Jay Nixon spoke about Shannon’s importance not only to St. Louis but also the Cardinals. Then the Maker’s Mark manager conferred onto Mr. Shannon a personal bottle of Maker’s 46. Tim Doyle, Anheuser-Busch, followed with a customized 6-pack of Mike Shannon labeled Budweiser and a Clydesdale horseshoe for good luck. As he pointed out, nobody has sold more Budweiser than Mr. Shannon. Finally, the City of St. Louis gave Mike Shannon a street sign, officially renaming a section of the street outside the restaurant, #18 Shannon’s Way.

Guests concluded by singing Happy Birthday before Mr. Shannon reluctantly cut his birthday cake. While all the gifts and well-wishes made an impression, what mattered most to Mike Shannon was sharing the moment with his family and friends. Here’s to the next 75 years, Big Boy!
