The Campbell House Museum hosted its annual Spring Members Party on Sunday, May 17, 2015. The afternoon enabled guests to meander between the historic house and the outside garden. This year, in honor of the closing celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, four local authors joined members to discuss Civil War St. Louis history and sign copies of their nationally renowned books. Everyone also had the rare treat to meet one of the Campbell family descendents.

Members and their guests relaxed with either wine or “Virginia Campbell’s cocktail punch”, savoring some hors d’oeuvres provided by the CHM. While some chose to remain in the garden, others either toured the Museum or took advantage of a special discount on the store’s new line of spring merchandise. Guests also could interact with four local authors who had their recent publications available to purchase and autograph: Dr. Louis Gerteis, history department chair at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; Nini Harris, author of A Most Unsettled State: First Person Accounts of St. Louis During the Civil War; Dr. Stacy Pratt McDermott, Assistant Director and Associate Editor of the Papers of Abrahma Lincoln; and Greg Wolk, Executive Director of the Missouri Civil War Heritage Foundation and author of Friends and Foe Alike, A Tour Guide to the Missouri Civil War.

However, the unexpected surprise revolved around a visit from Alan McFarland, a descendent of Robert Campbell from Northern Ireland. He was passing through St. Louis en route to Council Bluffs, Missouri, where he plans to research why
Robert Campbell ended up in Council Bluffs during one of his western expeditions.

Annual members provide the Campbell House Museum’s lifeblood. They fund education programming for local schools, help keep the lights on in the historic buildings, preserve St. Louis history and heritage.
