The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital hosted its annual illumination Gala, Saturday, April 26, 2014, to support cancer research at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. The event took place at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.

Guests attending the illumination gala support cancer research. Business and community leaders, top researchers and philanthropists raise money for cancer research while enjoying a lively evening that included a cocktail reception, dinner, luxury auction, Fund-A-Cure, special videos, and entertainment by award-winning actor, writer and comedian Martin Short.

Martin Short, a Saturday Night Live alum, made Ed Grimley and Jimmy Glick household names. His popularity led him to cross over into film and stage. Some of his films have included Three Amigos, starring Steve Martin and Chevy Chase, and Father of the Bride, also starring Martin. Most recently, Short played a recurring role on the hit comedy series, How I Met Your Mother.

The illumination Gala supports the Foundation’s Cancer Frontier Fund, created to help Siteman researchers accelerate breakthroughs that will change cancer care and expedite cures. Last year, more than 600 gala guests helped raise $1.8 million for cancer research.

Funds underwrite research on developing vaccines to prevent breast cancer, personalized vaccines to fight melanoma, a drug to reduce a life-threatening side effect of bone marrow transplant, a
genetic test to prevent overtreatment of oral cancer, and other groundbreaking projects. Since 2009, the gala has raised more than $7 million for cancer research, all of which stays in St. Louis for research.

The Siteman Cancer Center constitutes an international leader in moving laboratory and pre-clinical research into clinical practice with new methods and interventions to better diagnose, treat and prevent cancer. More than 350 Washington University physicians and scientists treat about 8,600 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year at Siteman, making it one of the largest cancer centers in the United States.
